Star Trek Conventions

This picture was taken shortly after the "I love you Scotty" exchange.  He was so approachable and personable.

I thought that perhaps it might be fun to share my past experiences at “Star Trek” conventions, and that others might enjoy hearing about them.

The very first “Star Trek” star that I was privileged to meet was Mr. James Doohan (Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott – Scotty). After speaking eloquently on the stage for a while, he generously decided to circulate amid the audience, greeting and shaking hands with as many fans as possible within a reasonable amount of time. Being the wonderfully-pushy parent that my father was (and I’ll always be grateful for his imposed courage since I as a young teen lacked any of my own), Daddy bodily shoved me toward the aisle and whispered insistently, “Reach out there!” Bless him, he never wanted to let me miss out on anything. Indeed, to my great good fortune, Mr. Doohan grasped my hand. I uttered fervently, “I love you, Scotty!” Extraordinarily, he replied without hesitation, “I love you, too!” The entire audience chorused, “Awwww!” It was a charming moment in my life and a treasured memory!

Mr. Walter Koenig (Ensign Pavel Chekov) could see right from the start how tremendously nervous and worshipful I was, and he clearly found it charming. He was graciously allowing his picture to be taken with each fan that approached. He put his arm around me and told my companion with the camera to warn us just before taking the picture. She did so, and as she snapped the shot, he turned and kissed me on the cheek! I was enchanted!

Ms. Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Nurse Christine Chapel) actually noticed, as she was signing an autograph for me, that I was wearing the exact shade of blue frost nail polish that she had worn as “Number One” in the episode “The Menagerie” (“The Cage”). She was genuinely delighted when I gushed that I had worn it especially in honor of her that day, and that I was overwhelmed that she had noticed!

I was in the dealer’s room when I turned, and whom should I see but Mr. George Takei (Mr. Sulu)! He had actually entered the dealer’s room to greet the fans, while he was not busy onstage! He was friendly, obviously highly intelligent, and a joy to talk to in person!

Mr. Leonard Nimoy (Spock) certainly knew how to thrill an audience from the very first moment. He entered the stage to a standing ovation, and when it finally died down, he said, “You humans are so emotional.” What a perfect beginning!

Mr. Mark Lenard (Sarek) was so very modest! I kept gushing to him about how wonderful he was, and he kept shaking his head and replying, “No, I’m not.” How extraordinary to find an actor so humble!

Chekov posed for a picture. To my surprise and delight he left a lasting kiss upon my cheek.  Could a fan ask for more?

Sulu: What a joy it was to talk to him in person.

Spock: "You humans are so emotional."

Sarek: Modest to a fault.

The quality of these older pictures may not be the best,
but I assure you that the memories of the events couldn't be better.
